Innovative Cleft Palate Simulator Unveiled: A Pioneering Collaboration of Makemedical, U of M, and Global Smile Foundation

[BARCELONA, Spain], [October 13, 2023] - Makemedical, the University of Michigan (U of M), and the Global Smile Foundation announced today the unveiling of a groundbreaking cleft palate surgical simulator, developed in an unprecedented collaborative initiative aimed at advancing surgical education and patient care in the field of cleft palate repair.

The Makemedical Buccal Flap Model was meticulously developed in association with esteemed world leaders in surgery, Drs. Usama Hamden and Robert Mann, who lent their extensive knowledge and invaluable expertise to this innovative project, ensuring its scientific accuracy and educational efficacy. Design and testing was done inside the University of Michigan, with Makemedical CoFounder, and U of M educator, Dr. David Zopf leading the lab.

“Cleft palate is a significant global health issue, and the new simulator is set to revolutionize the training of future surgeons, equipping them with the necessary skills to perform complex surgeries with precision and confidence. This simulator meticulously replicates the anatomical and physiological characteristics of cleft palate conditions, providing a lifelike, risk-free platform for medical practitioners and students to practice and hone their surgical skills,” said Owen Tien, Makemedical CEO. The simulator features University of Michigan MD Candidate Mitchell Chin’s production design and yields a model that is anatomically complex but allows for economical production - ensuring this model will be used globally in differing resource situations.

With its debut at Global Smile Foundation Comprehensive Cleft Conference Workshops (www.cleftworkshop.org), over twenty surgeons experienced the training tool firsthand in a workshop led by Dr. Robert Mann, a world leader in cleft surgery and this technique. Combining his deep expertise, recorded videos of real surgeries, and the Makemedical Buccal Flap Model, Dr. Mann was able to share the key elements of a buccal flap procedure with surgeons from around the globe.

The teams at Makemedical, U of M, and the Global Smile Foundation, alongside Drs. Hamden and Mann, remain committed to ensuring the widespread accessibility and utilization of the simulator, driving forward their collective mission to uplift global surgical standards and outcomes.

This new Makemedical Buccal Flap model will go on sale shortly, priced at $499 USD and available to ship November 2023.
